I got a discount for no reason
... this is how to get what you want
Hey man
Today I came across a post of mine from last year and I want you to read it.
It’s a true story with a potent lesson for any man.
Here it is…
So I was standing in a queue yesterday when something pretty crazy happened...
I approached the desk and with awful, broken Portuguese, told the lovely woman behind the counter which contact lenses I needed.
As she returned to the desk with my prescription, I said something pretty cheeky.
Looking her in the eyes with a warm smile, I enquired...
"Desconto?"
That's Portuguese for "discount?"
Let me be clear for a second.
There is absolutely NO reason why I should get a discount.
I don't work there.
I'm not a pensioner.
I don't work for the public services.
I don't even have particularly bad eyesight.
It's just a habit I started a few months ago to help get me out of my shell with strangers.
But unexpectedly, she replied in a fluster...
"OH! Desculpe. Uma moment" (Sorry, one moment)
I looked around slightly confused as she tip-tapped away on the computer.
As her smiling eyes lifted from the screen, I glanced at the till to find that she'd applied a 40% discount to my prescription.
This saved me 20 euros.
Simply because I asked.
Saying my "Muito obrigado" with a thick British accent, I left the building with a solid life lesson and a desire to write this post.
You see, I used to be a people-pleaser who thought my needs and desires were a burden to everyone.
But ever since I started just asking for what I wanted, I've felt more confident, free and fulfilled.
It isn't always about getting the thing. It's also about becoming a person who isn't ashamed of having desires.
So maybe getting what you want in life is sometimes as simple as asking.
What do you want in life right now that you aren't asking for?
And how could you start asking better?
Watch this video if you want to stop people-pleasing. It’s a banger.
Big love
